Galerie Anhava at Paris Photo 2018: a solo presentation of Antti Laitinen
Galerie Anhava is pleased to present a solo-show of Antti Laitinen at Paris Photo on 8–11 November 2018 at Grand Palais, Paris.

Looking at Antti Laitinen's (b. 1975 in Finland) photographs, videos and installations, one can sense the physical labour behind them: the hours of digging and chopping, moving, building and reorganizing. Laitinen's works are often recordings of his actions and performances, in which he tests the limits of his physical endurance. Reflecting his uncompromising attitude towards both physical work and the artistic process and content, his carefully manufactured artworks often look into the relationship of man and nature and the concepts of natural and artificial.

Anne-Karin Furunes's public work at the Fram Centre in Tromsø, Norway
Anne-Karin Furunes's commissioned public work at the FRAM Research Centre for Climate and Environment is unveiled on 21 August 2018. "I chose to portray the more unknown heroes in the Polar history who have explored the Arctic and Antractic", Furunes says. Her subjects are botanist Hanna Resvol Holmsen who participated in the Svalbard expedition in 1907–08 to study to the island's flora, and Per Savio, a sápmi who had substantial knowledge on the Arctic conditions and who worked as the caretaker of dogs at Carsten Borchrevink's expedition in 1898–1900.

The portraits are based based on archival images of Resvol Holmsen and Savio. Furunes has perforated the images on aluminium and completely changed the scale of the source material: the works, mounted in the buildings atrium, measure up to 14 meters in height.

Jani Ruscica's Flatlands at Helsinki Music Center
Jani Ruscica's Flatlands will be performed by harpsichordist Matias Häkkinen, saxophonist Linda Fredriksson and electronic musician Sara Milazzo at Helsinki Music Center on 16 August at 6 pm.

Flatlands is a combination of sound art, installation and an improvised concert. In the project three musical instruments were created based on visual sources from different historical periods. All three instruments are highly symbolic and embody the cultural values reflected in the imagery they are based on. The original images are associated with the notion of silencing. This makes sound – and thereby also hearing, listening and the act of being heard – the primary manners of reception. The three instruments also require their players to master entirely new techniques of playing.

Flatlands is commissioned by the Lönnström Art Museum.

Galerie Anhava at Volta14: solo presentation of Jorma Puranen
Galerie Anhava is pleased to present a solo show by Jorma Puranen (b. 1951) at the Volta Art Fair in Basel 11–16 June 2018.

Puranen’s new works particularly highlight the material nature of photography. He focuses on flashing reflections of light or dust on the surface of printed images, films and glass negatives found in archives or museum collections. Reflected light prevents the viewer from seeing the image as whole, which in artists thinking is a metaphor of difficulty of understanding history as objective truth.

Ars Fennica Prize to Kari Vehosalo
Kari Vehosalo has been awarded with the prestigious Finnish art prize Ars Fennica 2017. The winner was chosen by curator Beatrix Ruf.

“While visiting his studio and seeing his installation in the Ars Fennica exhibition at Kiasma, the profound and striking experience was for me the ghostly rendering of things as we know them. Images, the history of thinking, the history of metaphor and symbol and the function of language all merge into a theatricality of disruption; in Vehosalo’s work, human desires in their many forms of cultural expression have become dysfunctional and are reconfigured. The body, projections on realities, mythologies and meaning all break down, crash together and become questionable”, Ruf writes in her statement.

Heini Aho joins Galerie Anhava
Galerie Anhava is delighted to announce the representation of Finnish artist Heini Aho (born 1979 in Turku). Aho combines elements of sculpture, installation and the moving image into works addressing issues of space and perceptions of the environment. Her works have been exhibited at the gallery in a solo show in 2017, in Videokaffe's group exhibition in 2016 and in the PROJECT series in 2012. She has also participated twice in the CHART art fair with the gallery.

In Heini Aho’s works, the analytical meets the intuitive, and the material meets the immaterial. Aho’s method is based on observing a concrete phenomenon and the law-like characteristics of the material. A subtly light-hearted tone typical of the artist is present in them; it may be a touch of humour, wonderment with an element of joie de vivre to it, or a surprising feeling of freedom before ordinary matters.

Heini Aho graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2015, and the Turku Academy of Arts in 2003. In recent years, her work has been on show in solo exhibitions, such as The Primary Force Behind an Everyday Experience at the Titanik Gallery in Turku, Playing with the Dragon at Forum Box in Helsinki and More Black at the Small Projects Gallery in Tromsö. She has also participated in various group exhibitions, including Fin Between at the Arena 1 Gallery in Santa Monica in Los Angeles, meta/data/morphosis at the Or Gallery in Berlin and The Hunters Group: Heart Side Up at Kunsthalle Helsinki.

In 2016, Aho was awarded the main prize of the William Thuring Foundation. Her works are included in the collections of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the Saastamoinen Foundation and the HAM Helsinki Art Museum, the State Art Collections, and a private collection in Belgium, among others. Heini Aho is a member of the international Videokaffe artist collective.

Karoliina Hellberg joins Galerie Anhava
Galerie Anhava is proud to announce its representation of Finnish artist Karoliina Hellberg (b. 1987, Porvoo). Karoliina Hellberg showcased her works for the first time at Galerie Anhava in November 2016. Hellberg's works range from large and sumptuous paintings in oils and acrylic to precisely executed, even palm-sized works on paper. The core motifs of her works are rooms, interiors and buildings, and she draws inspiration from places, people and stories that appeal to her.

Karoliina Hellberg combines in her works tranquillity and untroubledness with an enigmatic atmosphere. In her nostalgic views and bourgeois salons, the boundaries between time and space are blurred. Hellberg is interested in the notion of aesthetic phantoms, which has become a methodological approach for her, an element of visual language.

Karoliina Hellberg graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2015 and in recent years she has participated in group and joint shows in addition to holding solo exhibitions at HAM Gallery in Helsinki (2016) and Gallery Kulma in Porvoo (2015). Her works are in the collections of the Päivi and Paavo Lipponen Fund, the Saastamoinen Foundation, the Helsinki Art Museum and in private collections in Finland, the United Kingdom and Belgium.

Anne Koskinen's artwork unveiled at VTT Centre for Nuclear Safety in Espoo
Anne Koskinen has created an installation of stone sculptures at the courtyard area of the VTT Centre for Nuclear Safety in Otaniemi, Espoo. The work is unveiled on Tuesday 13 September 2016. The Nuclear Physicist's Apple (Ydinfyysikon omena) consists of nine granite sculptures: eight sculptures are situated at the courtyard and one can be found inside the building.

The artwork was commissioned by the Finnish State Art Commission based on a competition held in 2013. Six entries were submitted, of which the competition jury gave first place to Anne Koskinen’s entry The Nuclear Physicist’s Apple (under the pseudonym Halkaisija). This work was evaluated as follows: “A positive and easily approachable entry avoiding the unnecessary mystification of nuclear physics. It tells of the work carried out in the centre with the aid of a humoristic metaphor. The various parts of the piece are in a large area, which gives it an everyday function by providing places for staff and visitors to take a break outside. The material, granite, is problem-free and easy to maintain.”

The work continues the story of Newton’s Apple suggesting that a nuclear physicist, instead of seeing an apple fall, would rather be interested in splitting an apple.
