Joonas Ahlava
(born 1975) is a young photographer, whose works have already been on show in the joint exhibitions of the youngest artists of the "Helsinki School" both in Sweden and Germany. His works were also displayed successfully at the University of Art and Design Helsinki department at the Art Forum Berlin fair last September. Ahlava makes portraits of his friends, people of personal significance to him. He shows them en face - or perhaps from behind, the direction cannot always be worked out from the pictures. The figures are dark silhouettes against a flat monochrome background. The warm black of the portrait and its background colours - blue, red or even café au lait - create a finely throbbing combination of colours while the subject itself remains mysterious. The subject can be recognized by those who know him or her, while others try to read the clues, precise in a sense, and will not know whether the interpretation is correct. On the one hand, these images contain the mood of the captured moment characteristic of photographs,
while on the other hand they bring to mind the popular silhouettes of the 19th century, which sought to record the most typical features of their subjects.
